Question of the week 3/6

Appropriation is everwhere in art. Marcel Duchamp is noctoriously famous for it when he turned a urinal into a sculpture and called it art. I think this case is justifiable because Duchamps intent was to critique the fine art world (and I am sure to shock it as well) and make everyone think for a second just what is art and what is not. Duchamp did not consider the urinal a piece of artwork from the beginning but his specific Fountain piece did become an artwork itself because it had meaning behind it. Another form of appropriation are those in hip-hop. Many old beats are sampled and mixed into newer songs. Kayne West is one of the many producers who look to the past for creative inspiration.
Appropriation that is not justified is when one uses anothers art to inform their own, but simply replicates it instead of making it into their own. Vanilla Ice ripped off the beat for Ice Ice Baby and said it was different because he edited a single note. When artists use others work and do not get consent or give credit to those who originated that of what they are appropriating it is unjustified.
